IEEE 7010: A New Standard for Assessing the Well-being Implications of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

This paper introduces IEEE 7010, a new standard for assessing the well-being implications of artificial intelligence (AI). It highlights the necessity of a holistic approach to measuring well-being impacts throughout the lifecycle of AI-enabled systems. The standard emphasizes domains like health, economy, environment, and social cohesion, using well-being impact assessment (WIA) to guide organizations in designing, deploying, and evaluating AI systems responsibly. The paper also outlines challenges, including operationalizing well-being metrics and embedding these processes into organizational structures, with recommendations for iterative implementation.
